Learning Outcomes

At the University of Utah

A Shared Framework for Alignment, Assessment, and Student Success

The Alignment Framework

How Learning Outcomes Connect

Learning outcomes at the University of Utah form a connected system across three levels: course-level outcomes, program-level outcomes, and institutional outcomes. Course outcomes build specific knowledge and skills, program outcomes define what students should achieve through a degree or the General Education program, and institutional outcomes articulate the broad learning goals expected of all students through the University’s Exceptional Educational Experience (E3) Framework. Together, these levels create a shared framework for alignment, assessment, and continuous improvement.

Alignment

Learning outcomes are intentionally connected across courses, programs, and institutional goals, creating a shared framework for student learning.

ASSESSMENT

Student work in courses provides evidence of learning that programs use to evaluate achievement of program and institutional outcomes.

Continuous Improvement

Assessment results inform curriculum, pedagogy, and program enhancements to support student success.

  Why This Matters

Learning outcomes provide a shared framework for curriculum design, assessment, and continuous improvement. By connecting course, program, and institutional outcomes, the University can demonstrate student learning, support academic quality, and meet accreditation expectations while improving the student experience.

How it Works

Student learning is structured across three levels. Together, these levels support alignment, assessment, and continuous improvement.

Level 1Institutional Learning Outcomes

University-wide learning goals expressed through the Exceptional Educational Experience (E3) Framework. These outcomes define what all undergraduate students should achieve regardless of major.

Level 2
Program-Level Learning Outcomes

Outcomes that define what students should know and be able to do upon completing a degree program. This includes both academic degree programs and the General Education program.

Level 3Course-Level Learning Outcomes

Specific, measurable outcomes that guide teaching, learning, and assessment within individual courses and provide evidence of student learning.
