Course-Level Learning Outcomes

Course-Level Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are specific, measurable statements describing what students should know and be able to do by the end of a course. They guide course design, teaching, learning activities, and assessment.

Course outcomes are the foundation of student learning and serve as the building blocks of program-level and institutional learning outcomes.

Defined at the Course Level

Course outcomes establish the learning expectations for all students enrolled in a course.

Consistent Across Sections and Modalities

Course outcomes remain consistent regardless of instructor, location, or instructional format.

Assessed Through Student Learning

Student achievement of course outcomes is evaluated through assignments, exams, projects, performances, clinical experiences, and other learning activities.

How Course Outcomes Connect

Course-level outcomes are the foundation of the University's learning outcomes framework.

Support Program Learning Outcomes


Course outcomes contribute to the achievement of program-level outcomes by helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies expected within a degree program.

Provide Evidence of Student Learning

Student work completed in courses provides direct evidence that programs can use to assess achievement of program-level learning outcomes.

Inform Continuous Improvement

Assessment results help faculty and programs evaluate curriculum effectiveness and make improvements that support student success.

Additional Requirements for GE & BD Courses

General Education (GE) Courses:

GE courses must include course-level learning outcomes aligned with the requirement-area outcomes established in Utah System of Higher Education policy (Utah Code R470).

Baccalaureate Degree (BD) Courses:

Bachelor's Degree requirement courses must include institutionally defined outcomes associated with the applicable BD requirement area.

These shared outcomes help ensure consistency, alignment, and meaningful assessment across the University's General Education and BD curriculum.
