Program-Level Learning Outcomes
Degrees & General Education
Program-Level Learning Outcomes (PLOs) define what students should know, be able to do, or value upon completing a degree program. They provide the framework for curriculum design, assessment, and continuous improvement within a program.
Program outcomes connect course-level learning to the University's institutional learning outcomes, expressed through the Exceptional Educational Experience (E3) Framework. Together, they help ensure that students develop both disciplinary expertise and the broader knowledge, skills, and experiences expected of University of Utah graduates.
PROGRAM ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
As a Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) accredited institution, the University is required to establish and assess learning outcomes for all academic programs.
1
Clearly define and publish program-level outcomes
2
Align program outcomes with the institutional goals as described by the E3 Framework.
3
Assess student learning and use results to improve teaching, curriculum, and student success.
HOW PROGRAM OUTCOMES CONNECT
Program-level outcomes serve as the bridge between institutional goals and individual courses.
- Institutional outcomes (E3 Framework) define the University's broad learning goals.
- Program outcomes define what students should achieve within a degree or academic program.
- Course outcomes provide the specific learning experiences and evidence used to assess program achievement.
This alignment allows programs to understand how individual courses contribute to broader educational goals and provides meaningful evidence for assessment and improvement.
